CELEBRATION OF BIRTHDAYS

I have written an article on this subject once before.  Over the years many have stopped these celebrations because they feel they are from pagan roots.  Some stopped because they felt the celebration of birthday's goes against the commandments of God.  In the Church of God (Seventh Day)  I do not believe there is anything against the celebration itself in our Doctrines of Belief.  It is a minor thing to be concerned about.  I wrote a post about this and shared it on face book, but I wanted to post it here on my blog.

I want to share something with you and would like to hear your comments about the situation I am about to share. Several years ago someone I know personally, had read from the bible into most of the doctrines that my church upholds. Let me say I do not agree with all the doctrines of my church, but I let God guide me to the truths I do know. The subject I want to talk about is the celebration of Birthdays. I think I am correct in saying there is no such doctrine in the bible that we shouldn't celebrate birthdays. God did not command us to celebrate Christ's birthday. The only birthday's mentioned in the bible were Kings birthdays. The three sited did not turn out well. The most devastating one was the beheading of John the Baptist. Now most of us celebrate birthday's. We do not celebrate Christ's birth. No where in the scriptures did God command us to celebrate the Son of Man's birthday. I believe, the reason God didn't tell us when exactly Jesus was born, is because he did not want us to celebrate his birth. We are to only remember his death, with the Lord's Supper Service once a year. Some say we shouldn't put candles on a cake and make wishes. Those are pagan traditions. So I no longer do that. Our Pastor started the Birthday Blessings Prayer. On the first Sabbath of the month, he calls all those who have a birthday in that month to come forward and be prayed over. I see nothing wrong with that. Most participate, but it isn't mandatory. If they do not feel comfortable with that, they do not go up front. That isn't a command from God, but does not go against what God teaches. So to me it is a matter of choice for each individual. I continue to pray for guidance from God over these matters. No one should judge another about such trivial things. They are between the person and God. We need to be opened minded enough to not cause contentions between church members causing some to fall away. Please let me hear your comments. May God continue to bless each and everyone.
