UNCLE CHARLES'S EULOGY

EULOGY

CHARLES OSCAR HINDS, JR.
April 26, 1933 to February 22, 2022

Charles Oscar Hinds, Jr. was born April 26, 1933 in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma. He passed away in his sleep Monday, February 14, 2022 in the Inola Health Care Center in Inola, Oklahoma, where he was a resident.

Charles was born the second child of Charles "Oscar" Hinds, Sr. and Martha Garrett Hinds.  He had an older sister Letha.  The family started out in Fort Gibson, Oklahoma, but in 1934 moved to Inola, Oklahoma on Charles's grandpa John H. Hinds's 80 acre farm, 5 miles south of Inola.  While living in Inola five more children were born.  Charles started school in 1939 in Inola. His older sister failed a grade, so he purposely failed the next year, so they wouldn't be in the same grade.  He continued to attend school in Inola until 1948, when the family moved to Willcox, Arizona to pick cotton.

Charles was drafted into the Army in 1952.  He was a Conscientious Objector and station at a hospital in Michigan.  He married Estella "Gail" Roof of Claremore on May 25, 1952.  They had no children. The nieces and nephews on both side filled that roll for them, and were honored to do so.  Charles and Gail were married 64 years and 10 months, at her death in March of 2017.  Charles was discharged from the Army in 1955 and the couple moved to Claremore, Oklahoma.  Most of their married life they lived in or around Claremore.  Charles moved into the Inola Health Care Center in September of 2021.

Charles had many jobs in his lifetime. He worked for Spartan's and John Zink Co. of Tulsa.  His last job was at Centrilift Cable in Claremore, Oklahoma. He retired in the early part of 2002.  At Centrilift Cable he was a supervisor over 5 women.  Many of his co-workers over the years called him Charlie.  At Centrilift Cable they called his employees "Charlie's Angels".  On the Hinds side of the family, we called him Charles or Uncle Charles.  This included his wife Gail. Her side usually called him Charlie.

Charles loved the Lord and served him for many years.  He was baptized into the Church of God (Seventh Day). This isn't the Seventh Day Adventist Church.  His grandpa John H. Hinds was a minister in the church from 1924 until his death in 1948.  Most of his life, Charles, attended the Church of God (Seventh Day) in Inola and Claremore, Oklahoma.  In later years, he and Gail joined the Seventh Day Bible Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  He remained a member of the Seventh Day Bible Church until his death.

He loved attending church, pot luck lunches, reading his Bible and watching TV.  He loved talking and visiting with people, telling true stories of the past.  He enjoyed having people over for dinner and to play games.  A big celebration of the Hinds Family was Thanksgiving Dinner. It became a yearly celebration.  One year it would be at Uncle Charles and Aunt Gail's and the next year at Uncle Dell (Raymond) and Aunt Wilma's.  Charles also loved to fish. One time he took two of his great nephews, Chad Conder and Craig James out fishing off of his pontoon boat.  They got into the middle of the Lake and the motor quit.  Uncle Charles couldn't get it started, so they had to use the oars to paddle the boat back to shore.  Fond memory for the boys.  I am sure Aunt Gail's nieces and nephews has other fond memories  to share.

Charles is survived by one sister-in-law, Wilma Harris Hinds of Claremore and one brother-in-law Don L Green (no period) also of Claremore.  Nephew Larry Johnston and wife Patricia of Claremore, niece Connie James and husband Rick of Inola, niece Tricia Conder of Claremore, niece Lorane Ridley of MO, nephew Stoney Hinds and wife Ginger of Claremore, nephew Scott Hinds, of Claremore, nephew Stacy Hinds and wife Suzi of Claremore, nephew Bill Hinds and wife Kari of MO, niece Angela Harges of Chouteau, Ok, and nephew David Green of Claremore. Plus great nieces and nephews and a host of relatives and friends.

Charles outlived his wife Gail Hinds (2017), parents Charles "Oscar" Hinds, Sr. (1971), Martha Garrett Hinds (1987),  older sister Eletha Johnston (2014), brother Dugan (WH) Hinds (1976), brother Raymond (Dell) Hinds (2015), infant sister Emily Hinds (1940), infant brother Jerry Hinds (1941), and sister Mary Green (2008).
