Thursday's Journal Entry
Good Morning Journal,
It has been raining this morning. The plants sure needed the watering. Thank you Lord for the showers. The sun is now trying to break through the clouds. God, please send more rain if it is your will. Amen.
There is a woman that we met at the Inola Health Care Center about three years ago. Her name is Carolyn. She is a very sweet little lady. She is Indian. She wears her hair in two long french braids down her back. The braids stop at her waist. Rick and I thought she was older than I am. Come to find out she is actually about three months younger than me. Her birthday is March 10. We began a Nursing Home Singing outreach program in March of 2015. We go to the local nursing home in Inola on the first Saturday of the month at 3:00 p.m. and sing with and for the residents. On the third Saturday Bob and Jeanette Cowan are in charge of the Nursing Home Singing at the Wood Manor Nursing Home in Claremore at 3:30 p.m. They come to Inola on the first Sabbath and help us out. We go with them on the third Sabbath and help them out.
Last month when we went to the Wood Manor Nursing Home to sing, in walks Carolyn. What a surprise! She moved from Inola to Claremore. She is so much happier in Claremore. It is a cleaner and better ran facility. She isn't bed ridden or anything like that. I am not sure why she is in the nursing home. We had visited with her when we went to sing at the nursing home in Inola, but never really got acquainted with her. We knew she had two daughters and grandchildren. One month last year when we went to the nursing home to sing, Carolyn was trying to get help for her youngest daughter Angela. She had just moved from Owasso to Claremore. She was in need of furniture, especially beds and bedding, her and her 4 year old daughter were sleeping on the floor. Her mom had gotten some pillows donated and we had some bedding that we took to Angela at her apartment.
We are now getting acquainted with her. She told us a little about her life's story. It is very sad. She has never been married but has two daughters. She said the girl's dad was no good. He would never buy milk or anything for the girls when they were babies. She had to provide for them herself. She was raped by her step-dad, her mom's second husband. If I remember correctly, she has two brothers and I think a sister. She grew up at Weewoka, Oklahoma. She has two daughters, the oldest just turned 40 on her birthday, and the youngest will turn 39 on hers. is month.
Neither one of her daughters are married. Carolyn told me both of her daughters were raped. Her oldest has lived in Claremore eight years. The oldest daughter has two children, but gave them both up for adoption. Her oldest daughter has two children but only one living. About a year ago they found the oldest granddaughter and have kept in touch with her. Carolyn's youngest daughter just moved to Claremore from Owasso last year. She has been in two relationships resulting in two children. Her oldest is eleven years old and the youngest is 4 years old. The eleven year's old dad they don't know where he is. The four year old's dad is paying child support.
I asked Carolyn where she was from and she said Weewoka, Oklahoma. I think she said both of her girls were born in Holdenville. I asked asked the youngest one where she grew up and she said all over Oklahoma. Carolyn moved from OKC to Inola about 5 years ago. I don't quite know exactly why, but she was in a mental institution there. Finally her oldest daughter came and got her out and brought her to Inola. She is a very religious person. Reads her bible and knows a lot of scripture. She is a prayer warrior. You can tell she has mental problems of some sort, but not retardation or down syndrome. She had to have hip surgery last year, but is fully recovered. I guess she was put in the nursing home because she cannot live alone. She likes to write and get mail. I am trying to write at least once a week. She has called me a lot and wants me to call her some time. We have been visiting with her after church on Sabbath. She seems to always need us to take her some place and we wind up not getting home to eat until around 4:00 or 5:00 in the evening. It makes for a very long day.
She called me on Tuesday just to chat. She always says she misses us and loves us so so much. That is about all she writes in her cards. She asked if I would call her sometime this week. I haven't yet. She has already sent us three cards and sent our daughter Cortnie a birthday card. That was so sweet of her. She hasn't even met Cortnie. She always wants to have prayer so we do. One week we went into another resident's room that was on her death bed. We prayed with her and her family. They truly appreciated it.
God is using us through these little missions, as I call them. God kept putting in Rick's mind nursing home. This happened I guess about 3 days in a row. So finally on his way home from work he stopped in and visited with a few of the residents. He came home and told me about it. He felt God calling him to start an outreach program at the local nursing home. We called and ask if we could start coming every first Sabbath to sing. We have been doing it for about three years. We have truly been blessed. Some people in those facilities have no family that comes to visit with them. Many are put there because the families either can't take care of them or don't want to. It is sad to see so many forgotten people. Some have no families at all. Let us pray for those people daily.
Later, gator,
