Thanksgiving Sabbath (in Tulsa)
Happy Thanksgiving to one and all. This Sabbath I have called the Thanksgiving Sabbath. It was the 5th Sabbath of the month. A tradition was started many years ago by my grandpa Elder Ross Johnston. He was a minister of the Church of God (7th Day). He was the pastor of 4 congregations at one time, Claremore, Tulsa, Coweta and Okmulgee, Okla. His main church was the Claremore group. He also started a group in Tulsa, Coweta and Okmulgee. The Okmulgee group met in the afternoon, so he was able go there every Sabbath afternoon. He would preach one Sabbath at Claremore, the next at Tulsa and the next in Coweta. When a month came up with a 5th Sabbath, he would have all the churches meet together at a different church each time. So the 5th Sabbath Meetings were formed. Later the Tahlequah Church wanted to be included and the 5th Sabbath meeting began being held at their building the month it was their turn. Even though my grandpa has passed on and the Coweta and Okmulgee churches are no more, we still have the 5th Sabbath Meetings, Claremore, Tahlequah and Tulsa. Today was Tulsa's turn. We had a smaller group than usual today. But we have had a death in one family and another the mother was taken to the emergency room this morning with chest pains and high blood pressure. She is in the hospital at least until tomorrow. Also this being Thanksgiving weekend some were out of town.
Our family had a nice Thanksgiving. My husband comes from a family of seven children. The family met at his dad's house in Coweta, Oklahoma. His mother passed away in 2005, so the past couple of years, the girls', in-laws included, have fixed the turkey, stuffing and trimmings. The youngest daughter baked the turkey. Of the seven children, 5 were there. The oldest, being a girl and the youngest, being a boy, did not show up. We had about 20 on Thanksgiving Day.
In more news, Rick starts a new/old job Monday December 1, 2008. You might ask, "What do you mean by a new/old job?" Well, he has been working for Riverside Nissan for the past year and a half as their parts courier, as a sub-contractor under DLS. Nissan had decided to not go through DLS any more and hire their own person for the courier job, plus the job they usually hire a person for in the parts department. Rick will be doing both jobs. The good thing is he will now have benefits and drive their truck and they will furnish the gas and pay his taxes. He will be making a little less than he is now, but he gets benefits which will make up for the pay loss. Plus he will be no longer self-employed.
My grand kids spent the night and went to church with me in Tulsa today. We are now home and they are both in my room playing, where I am trying to type up this latest post on the computer. They are about to drive me crazy. I can't hardly concentrate. Mady keeps talking and opening the closet door, Randy is seeing how long he can go without talking, but keeps asking me how long it has been. Believe it or not, it has been almost an hour. I didn't think he could keep quite that long. I am ready for a nap.
I plan to start posting some of the family history on here. So if there is anyone who would like some information can come to my blog and check it out. I guess I will start from what I know as the beginning and add more as I receive it or find it. Several members of the family has been trying to find information on great-great grandpa Melton James. The family says his name was Harvey Melton, but not sure that is correct. He had one son named Ollie and a family member found an obituary they thought was his, but his dad's name is listed as John Melvin James. I do not believe that is the correct obituary. They are kin to the outlaws Frank and Jesse James, but no one can find the connection. I think it is because grandpa probably changed his name. They say he posed as Jesse James and committed robberies and killed 17 men. When he moved to Oklahoma, he lived back in the woods and would hardly ever go into town. He would usually send one of the boys. One cousin remembers the outlaws coming to their house and eating supper with them on more than one occasion.
Time to sign off for now. I am tired and the kids are getting crankie. They are hungry and tired. Maybe if I fix them something to eat, they will settle down. It's time for the big football game, University of Oklahoma verses Texas A&M. Of course we are big time OU fans. If OU wants to be in the championship game, they need to win tonight's game. Then next weekend is the rivalry between OU and OSU. Both Oklahoma teams. By now you should know who I will be rooting for. The only disadvantage for OU is the game will be in Stillwater, Oklahoma, OSU's home field. I have a lot of confidence OU will win, even with the home field disadvantage. GO OU SOONERS!!!!
