"Fifth Sabbath Meeting in Claremore"
Today was the Fifth Sabbath Meeting at our church in Claremore, Oklahoma. You may ask what a Fifth Sabbath Meeting is. My grandpa Elder Ross Johnston started these all day meetings back when he was pastoring 4 churches, Claremore, Coweta, Okmulgee, and Tulsa. He would speak at a different church each Sabbath, but when a month came up with 5 Sabbaths, he had us to all meet at a Fifth Sabbath Meeting at one of the churches, so all 4 could come together and him preach to the 4 churches at the same time. That way he didn't have to choose which one to speak at that day. Also for fellowship, which was always nice. We would have our regular classes and worship service in the morning, have pot luck lunch and then an afternoon program of singing, skits, readings and etc. I have always enjoyed these days. Some have suggested ending these, but the majority doesn't want to. In the months that the Oklahoma State Quarterly Meeting, or Super Sabbath as it is called now, takes place and then the next week-end is the Fifth Sabbath Meeting, it is sometimes too much.
Dover Family Camp is coming up soon. The grounds were purchased in 1956 by the General Conference of the Church of God (7th Day). It was an all black school named Booker T. Washington. One of the ladies in the church at Dover, was a school teacher there, Sister Wilkes. She lived just down the road from the grounds. When she found out the building and grounds were for sale, she notified the Conference and they purchased the school. It remained the property of the Conference for many years, but most of Oklahoma took care of the grounds, so the General Conference turned it over to the Oklahoma State Conference. Dover is a very small town about 5 miles from Kingfisher, Oklahoma. The camp is about 5 miles out of Dover. Kingfisher is about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Usually the Youth Group at camp goes to Frontier City Amusement Park. We have been doing this for a lot of years.
The first campmeeting was held in 1957. I think I might have said something about this before, not sure. The last several years, it has been the 2nd week of June. Previous years it was held in July and August. This year it is June 8-14, 2008. Last year we celebrated our 50th year. I hadn't attended camp in several years, but decided I definitely wanted to attend the 50th Anniversary. I was able to go down on Thursday and spend time at camp until Sunday. It was nice to be back. I started attending in 1962, when I was 9 years old. My grandpa took me. I turned 10 in December of that year. I attended every year for the next 15 years. I got married the 14th year and my husband and I attended just on the weekend of the 15th year. I would attend a few days here or there with my two older children. Then my oldest daughter started going by herself and eventually my youngest did also. My youngest daughter was 9, when she began attending camp. This will be her 7th year.
My youngest daughter is working part time for me at the Library this summer. This is her first job. She is 16. I taught her how to check in and out books on the computer several years ago. She needs the experience and I will be there to help her. She just started this week. I think she is doing quite well. The Summer Reading Program starts this next week, on Wednesday morning. It will be every Wednesday and Thursday mornings' at 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the library through the month of June. This is a big project. She use to attend the programs and now that she is too old to attend, she has been helping out every Summer. This year I have put her in charge of the crafts. Her main helper will be Becky Maner. Becky has been a patron of the library for years. She has been helping us out with the Reading Program for a number of years. She has been for many years. Last year she was in charge of the whole program, but didn't want to this year. So I got the job back of planning everything, with her agreeing to help with the crafts.
The Art Class finished the mural on the southside of the library building. It looks great. It has an American Flag behind a silloute of 4 military people. Behind that is blue sky with wispy clouds. On one side is reads In Memory of Travis Grigg . . . 1981-2005. The other side reads In Memory of all our heros . . . Come by and check it out sometime.
My grandchildren have showed up, so I guess I will get off of here and go visit with them. My oldest daughter and her family have lived down the road from me for the past 2 and half years. They will be moving to Sperry soon. They found a place for rent for just $50.00 more a month than what they are paying where they live now. This new place has 10 acres and a shop build-ing. It will be closer to work for my daughter. The kids are all excited.
Hope you all have a good weekend.
